Using Triptico in the Classroom
Triptico could be a great tool to implement in a language arts class for 4th-8th grade. With the twenty-three resources Triptico has to offer, there are many different ways the resources provided can be used towards engaging students in the classroom. Although there are various ways in which Triptico can be used across subjects, I will focus on a lesson that can be used to promote various areas in social studies that can be used with 5th graders.
Currently I am in a 5th grade classroom for my field placement where the students have just wrapped up teaching their own mini-lessons to the class. This mini-lesson entails a presentation preventing the information along with various activities to help all the students in the classroom internalize the information presented. Some examples of subject areas that could be covered are women's rights, child labor, racism, or Native American civilization. Using Triptico, it is simple to split the class into groups and have the students within a group decide on which topic is most interesting to them. Once the groups have been established, there are multiple ways in which students can present their information with peers. For example, the image spinner is a beneficial way to teach new subjects and associate them with images to help students internalize the new information. Rather than just share information about child labor, students could upload images that portray these ideas more effectively to their peers. If the students teaching the mini-lesson would like to assess their peers' learned knowledge from their presentation, they can choose from various quiz activities provided by Tripico. Some examples include Match It, Find Ten, What's the Question, and What's in the Box. With all of these quiz tools, students can input their own information that they would like their audience to be quizzed on as well as decide various prizes for winners. Triptico also has resources to help break the class into teams and keep track of scores, which is a great way to motivate students to get involved in the assessment lesson.
There are multiple NETS-S standards that Triptico meets:
1. Creativity and Innovation: Rather than have students stand at the front of the classroom and talk about their subject area, Triptico will give them the opportunity to engage their other peers in learning new information through the use of technology. They can apply what they would typically do in an oral presentation with poster boards or essays and enhance this by creating activities that will actually engage their peers in the new knowledge they are presenting.
2. Communication and Collaboration: There are easy resources to group students for collaboration with this tool (i.e.Student Order, Student Group, Random Task, Class Vote). Since the mini-lesson is a group project, this will force students to collaborate on their ideas to create a successful presentation using Triptico.
3. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: The lesson above allows students to create their own activities for the class but this can also be implemented for small groups or partner work as well. Students are able to identify and define significant questions for investigation that they would like to teach to the rest of their classmates. Planning and managing activities to complete a project is also easily attainable with the numerous resources Triptico has to offer. With all the available quiz activities provided for learners, they are able to collect and analyze information they are given to make informed decisions to help them with the quiz activities.
4. Digital Citizenship: Since Triptico is easy to use and there are so many options, it will promote positive attitudes toward using technology that supports collaboration in the classroom.
5. Technology Operations and Concepts: By implementing the mini-lesson assignment, students will be able to understand and use technology systems. They will have the opportunity to select applications that most effectively convey their subject. Troubleshooting may arise since the tool may be new for some students; however, this will give them the opportunity to take their current knowledge and use it towards learning more about Triptico.
